Slovenia and Nato

Becoming a NATO member country was one of Slovenia’s most important foreign policy goals set when the country gained independence. The fundamental values of NATO as well as Slovenia’s strategic security and vital national interests are the factors underlying this objective.

Slovenia’s obligations as a NATO member are defined in the North Atlantic Treaty, which stipulates that member countries individually and collectively sustain and develop their own defence forces as a foundation of collective defence. Member countries are obliged to adhere to the principles underpinning the Alliance, as well as the policies and procedures for their implementation, including respect for the principle of the peaceful settlement of regional and international conflicts in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter.
As a member country, Slovenia actively participates in NATO activities and strives to play a visible and constructive role in the Alliance.
